Greg McElroy names major college football program most likely to win first national championship in CFP era

Only six teams have won a national championship in the College Football Playoff era. Alabama leads all teams with three CFP National Championships, while Clemson and Georgia have won two national titles since 2014.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy speculated on which college football program was most likely to win its first national title in the College Football Playoff era. He identified Texas as a program that has all the ingredients to win the first national title since 2005.

“I’m going to go with the Texas Longhorns,” McElroy said. “Now Sark has it cooking and you can make a case that they had the most complete team in the sport last year. Now while it will be a step up in competition week to week in the SEC.

“I think Texas’ resources, understanding of NIL, an innovative coach that has been really excellent in the portal and on the recruiting trail. It just feels like, for Texas, it’s only a matter of time before they win a national championship.”

Texas made its first appearance in the College Football Playoff last season after winning the Big-12 Championship for the first time since 2009. The Longhorns lost to Washington, 37-31, in the CFP semifinals at the Sugar Bowl.

The Longhorns will make the transition to the SEC this season, but are expected to compete as multiple top contributors return from last season’s team. Quarterback Quinn Ewers returns after finishing last season with 3,479 passing yards and 22 passing touchdowns.

Texas will kickoff its season against Colorado State on Aug. 31 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns will face Michigan in a massive Week 3 matchup and make their SEC debut against Mississippi State on Sep. 28.
