Kyle Lowry signing with 76ers for remainder of season after agreeing to buyout with Hornets

Kyle Lowry is headed to Philadelphia to play the rest of the season with the 76ers after agreeing to a contract buyout with the Charlotte Hornets, his agency Priority Sports announced via X (formerly known as Twitter) on Saturday. The six-time All-Star will sign a deal for $2.8 million, Lowry’s agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN.

This is hardly surprising news, given the connections — Lowry is from Philadelphia, played college ball at Villanova, was a member of the 2019 NBA Championship-winning Toronto Raptors team led by current Sixers coach Nick Nurse and was acquired by current Sixers GM Daryl Morey when he was in Houston.

The Sixers generated three open roster spots and maneuvered themselves below the luxury tax at the trade deadline precisely so they could add a player like Lowry, who became a buyout candidate two weeks ago when he was traded to Charlotte in the Terry Rozier deal. Philly also kept its non-taxpayer midlevel exception unused, leaving the team with a chunk of it ($2.8 million) to offer Lowry instead of the minimum deals that would have been on the table from most other contenders.

The Sixers deadline work also included sending out point guard Patrick Beverley and Jaden Springer in two separate trades, clearing the way for Lowry to be the primary backup behind All-Star Tyrese Maxey. With two roster spots left to fill and just enough wiggle room left below the tax to add two more minimum deals, the Sixers will likely keep hunting other veteran help.

As for Charlotte, the rebuilding Hornets clear a roster spot that can now be used on another developmental candidate. One possibility is promoting two-way Leaky Black to a roster contract after he started the last three games before the trade.

Lowry, 37, started 35 of the 37 games he played for the Miami Heat before the trade to Charlotte, averaging 8.2 points, four assists and 3.5 rebounds.
