Last month, Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Coby Mayo was “very close” to the big leagues. On Friday, the club’s latest stud prospect will be promoted and is on the verge of making his debut, according to a major-league source.
With the injury to Jordan Westburg (right hand fracture), the Orioles will use Mayo primarily at third base. The 22-year-old is the Orioles’ top prospect behind Jackson Holliday and has been terrific this season at Triple-A Norfolk, hitting .301 with a .961 OPS in 302 at-bats.
The move showcases the Orioles’ enviable infield depth and also is necessary given that Westburg’s return this season is unclear.
Mayo was a fourth-round pick in 2020 and drew significant interest at this year’s trade deadline. He was rated the game’s No. 18 prospect in Keith Law’s updated top-60 rankings, which The Athletic published two weeks ago.
The Baltimore Banner first reported Mayo’s promotion.
The Orioles are tied with the New York Yankees atop the American League East and opened a four-game series at the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night.
