The Florida Panthers are on the cusp of advancing to their second consecutive Stanley Cup Final. After recording a 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers in Game 5 on Thursday, the Panthers have a chance to close out the Eastern Conference Final series in south Florida in Game 6 on Saturday.
With the two teams tied at 1-1 in the third period of Game 5, Panthers forward Anton Lundell tallied the go-ahead goal with 9:38 remaining. Teammate Sam Bennett, who registered a two-point night, scored an empty-net goal late in the game. That proved to be a very important goal as Rangers winger Alexis Lafreniere did score at the 19:10 of the third period to make the contest a little more tense.
Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky continued to shine much like he has throughout the series. Bobrovsky turned away 25 of the 27 shots that he faced in Game 5, and allowed two or fewer goals for the fourth time in five games in the Eastern Conference Final.
Bobrovsky also has 46 career playoff starts with a save percentage of .900 or better, which is the fourth-most among active goaltenders behind only Marc-Andre Fleury (92), Andrei Vasillevskiy (73), and Jonathan Quick (59).
The Panthers can become the first team to advance to the Stanley Cup Final in consecutive seasons since the Pittsburgh Penguins accomplished the feat in 2009.
After falling behind in the series following a 5-4 overtime loss in Game 3, the Panthers have rallied to win two consecutive games, including Thursday’s contest at Madison Square Garden. Now the Panthers will have a chance to finish off the Rangers on their home ice in Game 6 on Saturday.
