Rutgers QB transfer signs with UK

Rutgers quarterback transfer Gavin Wimsatt has committed to and signed with Kentucky.

The native of Owensboro visited Monday.

More from CatsPause.com‘s Aaron Gershon on Wimsatt and his career with the Scarlet Knights:

“Wimsatt, a 6-foot-3 Owensboro High School alum, chose Rutgers over Kentucky and several others as a four-star class of 2021 high school prospect. He played in four games as a true freshman in 2021 to preserve a redshirt year completing 9-of-21 pass attempts for 45 yards with two interceptions while adding 67 yards on the ground.

In 2022, Wimsatt played in eight games and made six starts for the Scarlet Knights. On the year he completed 44.8 percent of his passes for 757 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 63 yards on 40 attempts. In his six starts, Rutgers posted a 0-6 record in his six starts and went 4-8 on the year.

Wimsatt was named Rutgers starting quarterback ahead of the 2023 season and was voted a team captain. He went on to start all 13 games in which he completed 47.8 percent of his passes for 1,735 yards and nine touchdowns on eight interceptions while adding a career-high 497 yards on the ground with 11 rushing touchdowns.

His 497 rushing yards set a Rutgers quarterback record while his 11 rushing scores were ninth most in a season in program history, most ever by a quarterback, led Big Ten quarterbacks in 2023 and ranked tied for sixth among quarterbacks nationally.

With Wimsatt under center, Rutgers posted a 7-6 record and earned a bid to the Pinstripe Bowl, where it lost to Miami. The 7-6 record was Rutgers’ best since 2014, when the Scarlet Knights went 8-5.

Wimsatt’s decision to transfer comes after Rutgers added Athan Kaliakmanis, who started at Minnesota last season and named Kaliakmanis its starting quarterback following spring camp.

The Owensboro native has two years of eligibility remaining.”

Kentucky now has three quarterbacks on scholarship as Wimsatt joins Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff and true freshman Cutter Boley. Georgia State’s Beau Allen joined the program as a walk-on as well. The Wildcats do not return a single quarterback from last season’s roster.
